Here&#8217;s why"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Introduction to Quadruple Witching Day<\/h2>\n<p>Traders work on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange in New York City, U.S., Dec. 17, 2025. <\/p>\n<p>Brendan McDermid | Reuters<\/p>\n<p>Wall Street could be in for a volatile end to the week as traders brace for what Goldman Sachs says will be the largest options expiration on record.<br \/>\nOptions expiration days are a monthly occurrence on Wall Street when the contracts on short-term derivatives expire.<br \/>\nFriday happens to be one of the rare times (four times a year) when options on four types of securities expire on the same day: index options, single stock options, index futures and index futures options.<br \/>\nThis is called a &#8220;quadruple witching&#8221; day.<\/p>\n<h2>Impact of Quadruple Witching Day on Trading<\/h2>\n<p>More than $7.1 trillion in notional options exposure is set to expire this Friday, according to Goldman, including roughly $5 trillion tied to the S&#038;P 500 index and $880 billion linked to single stocks.<br \/>\nDecember options expirations are typically the biggest of the year, but this one eclipses all prior records, the firm said.<br \/>\nTo put the scale into context, the options expiring Friday represent notional exposure equal to about 10.2% of the total market capitalization of the Russell 3000, Goldman said.<\/p>\n<p>The S&#038;P 500 is up about 15% this year, trading around 6,770 on Thursday.<br \/>\nStock Chart Icon<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static-redesign.cnbcfm.com\/dist\/a54b41835a8b60db28c2.svg\" class=\"Collapsible-dismissButton\" alt=\"hide content\"\/><br \/>\n<iframe title=\"S&#038;P 500 YTD\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/appchart?symbol=.SPX&#038;range=YTD&#038;type=mountain&#038;embedded=true&#038;$DEVICE$=undefined\" height=\"460\" scrolling=\"no\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border:0;width:100%\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nS&#038;P 500 YTD<\/p>\n<h3>Volatility and Price Swings<\/h3>\n<p>That dynamic could lead to choppy trading, particularly around heavily watched levels in the S&#038;P 500, according to Jeff Kilburg, founder and CEO of KKM Financial.<br \/>\n&#8220;I am expecting volumes to be well above normal as options traders finalize 2025 profits and losses,&#8221; Kilburg said.<br \/>\n&#8220;But a lot of the repositioning seems to have already taken place.<br \/>\n6800 is a big strike price in the S&#038;P and we will see if the bulls can defend that level after pushing the market back above it this morning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Pinning and Stock Price Movement<\/h3>\n<p>While the broader market could have heightened volumes and volatility, some individual stocks with large open interest could see a different scenario.<br \/>\nIf options traders who hedge their positions are sitting on a large amount of at-the-money options, the activity tied to those contracts expiring can actually calm price swings rather than intensify them.<br \/>\nOptions that are &#8220;at the money&#8221; have strike prices that are equal to the current price of the underlying asset.<\/p>\n<p>As traders adjust their hedges, prices can get pulled toward heavily traded strike levels, a phenomenon known as a &#8220;pin,&#8221; leaving stocks hovering near key levels into the close, Goldman noted.<br \/>\n&#8220;This situation is often referred to as a &#8216;pin&#8217; and can be an ideal situation for a large investor trying to enter\/exit a stock position,&#8221; Goldman said.<\/p>\n<h3>Affected Stocks<\/h3>\n<p>Stocks with options expiring Friday that represent a large share of their typical daily trading volume \u2014 and could be prone to &#8220;pinning&#8221; \u2014 include GeneDx Holdings, BILL Holdings, Avis Budget Group and GameStop, the firm found.<\/p>\n<h2>Smart Tip for Readers<\/h2>\n<p>To navigate the potential volatility on quadruple witching day, it&#8217;s essential to stay informed about market trends and be aware of the stocks with large open interest that may be affected by options expirations.<br \/>\nReaders can visit <a href=https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/12\/18\/friday-could-be-a-wild-day-of-trading-on-wall-street-heres-why.html >Here<\/a> for more information on the topic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Introduction to Quadruple Witching Day Traders work on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange in New York City, U.S., Dec. 17, 2025.
