In an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Bessent stated that it’s “very unlikely” the Supreme Court will overturn Trump’s signature economic policy, citing the court’s previous decision to uphold a key Affordable Care Act provision.<\/p>\n
Bessent’s comments come amidst a looming Supreme Court decision on Trump’s use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose tariffs. The IEEPA grants the president wide latitude to use economic tools in response to an “unusual and extraordinary threat.” Trump has invoked this act to impose tariffs on various nations, including a new slate of tariffs on goods coming from Europe.<\/p>\n
Trump announced the new tariffs on Europe, which will begin at 10% on February 1 and escalate to 25% on June 1, in response to the ongoing dispute over Greenland. The president has long sought to acquire the Arctic territory from Denmark, but leaders in Greenland, Denmark, and across Europe have widely rejected his demands. European leaders targeted by the new tariffs have responded, stating that “tariff threats undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral.”<\/p>\n
The Trump administration claims that a US acquisition of Greenland is critical to national security, citing the need to counter Russia and China’s expansion in the region. However, the move has been met with resistance, and a high-level working group has been established to chart Greenland’s future.<\/p>\n
Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen and Greenland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Vivian Motzfeldt at the White House to discuss the issue. The meeting was described as “frank but constructive,” and the group agreed to establish a dialogue based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.<\/p>\n
